NEW BEGINNINGS
Over the last 12 months there have been many discussions and articles about resilience. Very appropriate for the roller coaster ride we have all been on since February 2020.
There has also been the exhaustive use of the word “unprecedented”. Turn on a TV or radio and someone mentions the word. Bizarre, uncommon, unparalleled, unusual, abnormal, unfamiliar, odd, strange, peculiar, erratic, unnatural and inconceivable are some other synonyms that are much more descriptive and not so monotonous.
We have all had to find new ways and resources to deal with the fall out of this horrendous pandemic. Some people say we are all in the same boat, but some boats have engines and others sails. Some are easier to navigate through the storm and safer than the little rowboat.
I left my beloved South Africa in August 2019 to relocate in Leeds after falling in love with a Scotsman. This move coincided with my desire to launch my own specialist recruitment company! I reached out to my esteemed and long-term colleague, Deon Maxwell; over the last few years, we have talked about building a specialist start-up Executive Recruitment business and this has now become a reality.
Some might question launching a business during a pandemic but change is part of how we evolve, whether through our beliefs, friends, image, self-talk, expectations, use of time, use of money and affiliations.
Adopting the right mind-set is the choice to persevere and to be successful ultimately. Perseverance is a human attribute associated with exceptional leaders and a quality that creates winners. Cultivate supportive networks and encourage yourself no matter what. Thomas Edison famously said: “Genius is one per cent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration.” Let that be our light-bulb moment!
My personal journey may have brought me to the UK but I am delighted that my professional one remains global. Exciting for the months ahead and our determination to persevere and succeed.
